The legacies of the 125th anniversary

As of December 18th, 2018, our official anniversary date, we are pleased to announce the establishment of a Foundation dedicated to the Château Frontenac's Heritage. The mission of this foundation will be to preserve, protect, enhance and raise awareness on the rich history of the hotel, which has participated in the cultural, economic, political and tourist life of Quebec City, ever since its opening in 1893.

"The year of the Chateau's 125th anniversary was an opportunity to delve into many memories," said Robert Mercure, former General Manager of Fairmont Le Château Frontenac and President of the Foundation. The time has come to pass down to future generations all the history of the Chateau and to preserve it. "

Although there is a considerable amount of archival material surrounding the Château Frontenac, they are not centralized in one place at the moment. The foundation's mission will be to organize and promote the history of the Chateau, including a virtual archive website, exhibitions and special events where the public will be invited to immerse themselves in a slice of history of the famous hotel.

Built on the site of the Forts and Château St. Louis, seat of power since the beginning of the colony, and host of many historic events of international stature such as the Quebec Conferences and the Summit of the Americas, the Château Frontenac played an important role in the history of the city, the province and the country. Many celebrities have honored the Chateau with their presence, such as Alfred Hitchcock, Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill and Sir Paul McCartney, to name a few. In addition, many people have fond memories of the hotel. "Everybody has a story to tell about the Chateau, whether it's a special family event, a memorable stay or someone you know who works or has worked at the Chateau, history is ubiquitous at Château Frontenac and everyone is interested, "notes Ken Hall, General Manager of Château Frontenac. "I am delighted that the memory of the Chateau is so bright in people's hearts. This Foundation is a springboard to allow everyone to get to know the Chateau Frontenac a little more, "he adds enthusiastically.

The Foundation's Board of Directors will be chaired by Robert Mercure, former General Manager of Château Frontenac and project initiator.

The Foundation wants to set the stage for a new business model by aiming to protect and enhance the heritage of historic hotels like the Chateau, but also for other businesses in the preservation and in value of the heritage.

A first exceptional activity for the Foundation
For its first official activity in 2019, the Foundation sets the tone with an exhibition dedicated to the visit of Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco to the Château Frontenac, a visit which will celebrate its 50th anniversary. This exhibition, presented in the hotel's grand lobby, will feature the famous dress worn by the Princess at the Quebec Carnival Regency Ball in February 1969. This dress will be accompanied by another dress worn by the Princess Grace at Expo 67 in Montreal, July 1967, a quilted khaki green coat from Bidermann and a green velvet coat by couturier Christian Dior, from the Fall / Winter 1970 Collection. A Balenciaga hat worn during her stay and archival photos will accompany the outfits to trace this rare visit in Quebec City. The outfits will be presented free of charge to the public from February 7 to April 2, 2019.

This event is made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Palace of Monaco, the Consulate General of Monaco in Montreal and Québec’s Musée de la Civilisation.

A new book to celebrate the beauty of Château Frontenac
We are also pleased to launch the book Château Frontenac: in the heart of Old Quebec by David Mendel, a renowned local historian. To end this year of celebrations, what better treat than a book to pay tribute to the beauty of the Château Frontenac and the historic district of Old Quebec. Taking the Château as the central axis of his excursions, David Mendel invites you to see from a historical angle both the charms of the Château and neighboring heritage buildings, offering at the same time a route to discover Old Quebec.

The book Château Frontenac: in the heart of Old Quebec is published by Éditions Sylvain Harvey in French and English versions and is available at the Fairmont Store in Château Frontenac at a cost of $ 9.95. The book will also be available to all the Château's guests staying on the Fairmont Gold floors, as well as in the suites.
